The news spin has begun on the vote for independence in Catalonia. And the news media, oddly enough, fully supports Catalonia’s independence. After they rejected Brexit and the dismantling of the EU back into the independent nations they once were, after rejecting President Trump’s attempt to make America more independent by protecting our sovereignty against EU and UN overreach, why would the news media and the left in general now be supporting Catalonian independence?

This one is easy, but you’d never think so by reading the news spin.

Although Spain is essentially a socialist country (and one of the many failing socialist economies, hence its position among the PIIGS, all of which are failing because of their socialist systems), it is not quite socialist enough. The Catalonians are hardcore leftist/socialists. The Catalonians want independence to become even more socialist.

The support of the left and of the news media for this independence is a perfect follow-up for their abandonment of Putin and Russia. Until recently, the left hailed the Soviet system as the system for socialist, global governance. Gorbachev was their savior. Now they don’t waste a single opportunity to assail Putin and Russia. Why? Because the Western left believes that Putin has gotten a little too much of that free market and national sovereignty taint in his blood, and that to them, is the core of all evil. In essence, Russia has left the plantation and is now the enemy of the Western left.

So now Catalonia wants to splinter off and become a small, hardcore socialist enclave in Europe. Would they be invited to join the EU? Of course. They would be welcomed with open arms. And that’s the plan, to bring as much land mass and resources and the highest count of people under the central authority of the EU.

The news media is propagandizing the vote as they always do, by condemning the ‘boot’ of fascism that Spain is using to control its national borders. Do the American left not hail Lincoln for preserving the Union? They do. But what they are really hailing is the conglomeration of power under central authority, the growing totalitarianism of a central, iron-fisted government. This is precisely why they opposed Brexit, because it dismantles that centralized power. But when it comes to Spain trying to preserve the Union of their country, the left condemns Spain as being fascists, as attempting to crush Catalonian independence with the boot of fascism. Apparently, some unions are more equal than others.

So which fascist boots are doing the stomping here?

If history is an echo of itself and this situation is at all tied to the Spanish Civil War that Ernest Hemingway did such a beautiful job propagandizing for in For Whom the Bell Tolls, is it the Franco-type fascists doing the stomping, or is it the millions of boots of hundreds of socialist/communist organizations (many sent from Germany, eastern-bloc countries, and the Soviet Union) seeking to destroy Spain from within by breaking it apart and then taking over the fragmented country?

An exercise I often recommend to people is to read Hemingway’s propaganda piece on the Spanish Civil War, then read George Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia (which provides a realistic and objective view of the Spanish Civil War – really an invasion by hostile forces – by someone who fought against Franco) and then try to reread Hemingway’s novel again. The stark contrast between the two interpretations of the war will show clearly that Hemingway’s novel is nothing but a shallow romance – and a propagandist romance at that. It will also help to crystallize the current propaganda covering not only the vote for Catalonian independence but any national/international issue that hinges on independent, national sovereignty that is based upon free markets.

Yes, Franco was a fascist, but he saved his country from being taken over by communists. And he prevented Germany from invading Spain during WWII.

In Homage to Catalonia, you’ll better understand how leftists (one overarching fascist supergroup) regularly use ad hominem labels such as “fascist” in order to further their totalitarian agenda. You’ll also see why Orwell abandoned the ‘socialist’ project (as H.G. Wells also did) after realizing it was nothing more than totalitarianism with a different label.
